Direbrook Lore

Long ago humans sought to destroy magic as they led witches, warlocks and other anatomical conduits up rickety old steps towards the hanging rope to cut them off from the earth entirely. The humans would press the magical beings down into the cool depths of rivers, testing to see if they would rise again. Humans have always been this way. Ready to tear asunder that which they don’t understand and make a spectacle of their callous and cruel deeds.

Marked as followers of evil, the witches decided that they had had enough of watching their loved ones hung and drowned because of the facade of the Holy Empire. So, those with magic pledged their ties to the Aether, completing rituals upon sacred ground that opened portals to their new home.

Enriched with magic, this land greeted the lost souls with an abundance of life and power and only asked for one thing: A conduit from each house. One body to renew its power and strength. One body for every generation.

This new land demanded the attention of a conduit in order to safely traverse the dangerous and ever-changing landscape. There are many who could learn, but Aether Walkers were born for such a task as they were able to weave together the Aether and breathe change into the elements.

The Direbrook house was originally from Germany, the family was headed by a bullheaded man named Ambros Maxixilian and the moment The Direbrook family arrived in Majik, Ambros had been pulled into the Aether.

The house waited for him to return for a fortnight and when he stepped through the gate there was a tall, slender, horned and graceful dæmon companion for Direbrook to work with as a conduit.

With his Dæmon companion, Ambros flattened the land around them, raised buildings and set cobblestone down for the new Town of Direbrook, a place where lost souls could find comfort and rest. Once built, he raised it up from the ground to traverse the skies.

There are many realms in the known universe, Mortal Realm, Fae Realm, Daemon Realm, and many more. The Realm of Majik is old and ever changing and is known to be the home of Echidna, the Mother of Monsters. This chaotic land bred the strange and wicked, and could be blamed for many of the viruses that afflict humans such as vampirism or lycanthropy. However, the realms native creatures range from Basilisks, Gargoyles, Dragons, Chimeras, Unicorns, and Minotaurs to name a few. They once roamed the land with only their natural order to hinder them.

The realm of Majik that was once known as the birthplace of monsters, was now inhabited by the mutated humans categorized as Witches. Once the witches arrived in the realm and settled, the monsters began being run out of their homes and habitats, they rebelled against the settlers which resulted in a war that the witches won by joining together to create the Majik Council.

Thirteen is a powerful number and so thirteen houses were chosen to join together in a bond that boosted their magic exponentially, enough to turn the tide in the war. The Majik council would eventually govern over the all witches. The Dæmons contracted and connected to each of the thirteen and flattened the monster armies; the monsters were banished from where the witches had erected towns.

Many monsters left to find a home in another realm, some stayed in areas that hadn’t been defiled by the witches. For almost a century these monsters have been kept from interacting with witches in a positive way.

Since becoming Mayor, Lorraine has taken steps to fight this inequality, directly going against The Majik Council and their prejudice. Last year, Direbrook and Monsters won the war against The Majik Council. Unfortunately for the Council, the things/secrets they buried are coming to light. The Voidkin are slowly getting their memories back and a certain daemon has resurfaced looking for Ambros.

Whether to do harm or give love, we’ll find out when they arrive…

Year 1

Direbrook has been around for over 500 years. A floating city above Majik. Lively with creatures of all kinds. In years past, Direbrook stayed within the rules set by the Majik Council, but now it was time for a change. Lorraine Direbrook took over from her predecessor and is now in charge as Mayor. With her Wife and Mayoress, Penny and her partner, Daemon and troublemaker Garrofir, Direbrook is ready for a change.

Celebrating the anniversary of the marriage between Penny and Lorraine, the walls between Majik and other realms open for the first time since witches arrived in Majik escaping from the Mortal Realm. With portals allowing the transport of creatures of all kinds to Direbrook, the Majik Council, already feeling their control over Direbrook lessening, sent spies.

The Denizens of Direbrook show their acceptance for all who visit and share in the celebration. Parties and separate events are joyous occasions. A three day Celebration, because why have only one day to spend with everyone, when you could have more.

Our resident Void Witch opens the portals showing her powerful magic and dance. A welcome speech by Mayor Lorraine and Mayoress Penny, starts the festivities. Our Dark Market is full and bustling. The Gilded Rose never quiets, beings from all over getting to know each other and conversing with Direbrook’s denizens.

The second day culminates in a Midnight Ball with a floor show, telling of the story of Lorraine, Penny, and Garrofir. Turning into our more modern dance party rather than a ball. More events throughout the final day. Closing it out with a declaration to continue to keep the portals open, a direct rule breaking against the Majik council.

What they did not know and would find out eventually is that we had plans to meet with Echidna, The Mother of Monsters. And so closed our first year of Direbrook.

Year 2

It has been over a year since Direbrook tore down the walls between realms allowing travel to and from Direbrook from other realms. Lorraine has been granted a meeting before Echidna, The Mother of Monsters. And so year two of Direbrook starts.

The Majik council has sent more people to spy on us, but they are not being discreet, they want to catch us breaking the rules or stop our meeting with Echidna. Our visitors noticed the spies and are good at distracting and confusing these arrogant people.

The Majik Council, try as might, could only watch from the sidelines as Lorraine convinced Echidna that Direbrook and its people were on their side and wanted to bring down the Council, but we needed their help. A celebration for the ally gained immediately started and lasted well into the night.

Lorraine suspected the Council would find out and her suspensions were confirmed through a letter sent from her distant relative and first Mayor of Direbrook, Ambros Direbrook. In the letter, many of the Direbrook family were “invited” (threatened) to a Gala The Majik Council was hosting.

Direbrook secured a powerful ally and as such there was no need to be afraid.

Year 3

Since last Direbrook many things had been brought into question. Ambros was seen at the involuntary attendance Gala. He was nothing like what his journals had inferred. He was arrogant and prideful, however in his journals he was curious, wondrous, and kind. In the days of the portals to Direbrook opening, the threat from the Majik Council and Ambros followed them home.

The war between Direbrook and the Majik Council was about to start but Mayor Lorraine and her allies weren't backing down. Ambros tried one last ditch attempt to divert Lorraine's futile endeavor, while her allies researched why Ambros had changed so much. It was later revealed to be the outcome of a Shimmer Hex. A forbidden Celestial spell and one of the ways to break it was akin to breaking the glass, blinding his mind.

Penny Direbrook gladly took upon this request, as Penny had been the target of Ambros’s experiments for years, while she had been imprisoned within the Majik Councils walls.

The official break from the Majik Council and the shimmer hex being broken, left the Majik Council with only 12 houses, significantly dropping their power. The battle ended swiftly with many monsters, witches, and beings from all realms standing on Direbrooks side.

The battle was over but a shift occurred which shook the realm to its core and now even more secrets and beings are being revealed.
